Vintage Applesauce-Spice Cake (1957)

Ingredients

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350F. Sift together flour, salt, baking soda, and spices. Cream shortening; add sugar and beat until light and fluffy.
Stir in eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Combine molasses, applesauce and vanilla; add alternately with dry ingredients, mixing just enough to blend. Add raisins by combining with last portion of flour mixture.
Do not overbeat (this is important). Pour batter into two greased and floured 8-inch cake pans. Bake 30 minutes or until cake tests done.
Yields 2 - 8 inch layers.
