Red Velvet Cake

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 T. vinegar
  • 1 tsp soda
  • 1 1/2 C sugar
  • 2 oz red food coloring
  • 2 T. cocoa
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 1/2 cups cake flour
  • Icing:
  • 5 T. flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup butter

Instructions

Cream shortening, sugar and vanilla. Add 1 egg at a time. Mix coloring and cocoa and add to sugar. Sift flour, salt and add to sugar mixture alternately with milk. Combine soda and vinegar and add to mixture. Bake at 350 (F) for 30 minutes.


Icing:
Cook flour and milk until thick. Cool. Cream sugar, vanill and butter until fluffy. Add flour mixture and beat until fluffy.


This is my Aunt Kathy's recipe and was my daddy's FAVORITE cake:)
