Combine the cornmeal, flour, pepper and salt in a bowl and mix well. Stir in the egg. Add the okra and onion and mix well. This mixture has an unusual consistency, so you must press the mixture by tablespoonfuls on the side of the bowl to form the croquettes in hot oil in a deep-fryer until brown on both sides and the desired degree of crispness, turning once. Drain on paper towels. Serve immediately.
