Great Grandmother Fry's Delicate Spice Cake (1957)
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- 2 cups sifted confectioner's sugar
- 3/4 cup heavy cream
Instructions
Cream the butter, gradually adding the brown sugar. Add 1 egg at a time, beating well after each addition. Preheat the oven to 350F. Sift together the flour, salt, baking, soda, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves. Add to the butter mixture alternately with the sour cream. Divide between 2 buttered 8" layer cake pans.
Bake 30 minutes or until a cake tester comes out clean. Cool on a cake rack and ice with the following:
1/4 cup melted butter
2 cups sifted confectioner's sugar
3/4 cup heavy cream
Mix the butter and sugar together. Add just enough cream to make the mixture spreadable. Ice the cake when it is completely cooled.
*From my Great Grandmother Fry's cookbook :) This is a cookbook that has her handwritten recipes and clippings:) It is held together by a red rubber-band:)
This one is hand-written and has a note scribbled on it "very good! KEEP!" :)
